Coal imports through northern China's Erenhot port on the border with Mongolia have set a new record, local media reported, underscoring expanded energy cooperation between China and Mongolia.
The border port's coal imports reached 3.01 million tonnes in the year to December 24, totaling 50,200 rail wagons, up 37% from the same period last year.
To facilitate coal imports, customs officials have conducted on-site visits and discussions with importers to address difficulties, implementing 24/7 service and online appointments.
They have also promoted "centralized declarations and joint rail tickets" to speed up clearance by around one day.
Coal imported via Erenhot is mainly used for heating in Erenhot city and partially transported to power plants in Hebei, Liaoning and other parts of Inner Mongolia.
"As the main border crossing for energy imports between China and Mongolia, smooth coal flows are crucial for heating needs in Erenhot city," said Nie Weidong of Erenhot Customs. "We've set up green channels and coordinate closely with importers to ensure coal can clear customs swiftly upon arrival."
The strong performance this year underscores Erenhot's importance as the largest China-Mongolia land port and main gateway for coal and other cargoes.
