Spain's share of electricity generated from renewable sources surpassed 50% to 50.8% in 2023 compared to 42.2% a year earlier, Reuters reported on December 19, citing Energy Minister Teresa Ribera.
Efforts will continue to be made to add energy storage and offshore wind farms to achieve the decarburization goals. Despite pending challenges, Spain's contribution to the transformation of the European energy system is evident and fundamental, Teresa Ribera was cited as said.
Spain is the second European country besides Scandinavia to reach this 50% target for the first time this year. It is expected to raise the share of power generation from renewable sources to four-fifths by 2030 with its superior natural conditions and global investment.
Germany's renewable power generation also climbed to 53% for the first time in 2023, higher from 44% in 2022, according to preliminary data released on December 18.
Power generation from onshore wind energy in Germany hit a new high for the year as a whole, while solar power production rose to all-time high in June. At the same time, renewables accounted for 52% of Germany's total power consumption, an increase of five percentage points, Bloomberg reported.
Germany still makes effort to remove obstacles to renewable expansion faced with higher financing and component costs, which is expected to reach 80% renewable power generation by 2030.
Spain and Germany were Europe's top two installers of photovoltaic solar facilities in 2023, adding 8.8 GW and 14.1 GW respectively over the past year.
Their renewable sectors had outpaced France, Italy and the United Kingdom with similarly green transition plans, media reported.
