Ukraine's steel production totaled at 5.71 million tonnes over January-November 2023, down 7.3% or 0.45 million tonnes compared with the same period last year, according to Ukrainian News Agency.
Ukraine produced 5.45 million tonnes of pig iron in the same period, declining 11.3% or 0.69 million tonnes year on year. The production of rolled products fell 7.2% on the year to 4.86 million tonnes, data showed.
Steel production fell sharply to 6.26 million tonnes in 2022, a 3.4 times year-on-year decrease. That of pig iron and rolled products both reduced by over three times compared to 2021.
Besides, crude capacity from the five steel industry operating mills in Ukraine not located in areas of military activity was estimated at 16 million tonnes, one source noted.
Ukraine is seeking ways to increase steel industry exports to boost its revenues. The country's steelmakers will need to provide financing for small and medium-sized steel consumers, simplify customs procedures and expand the range of products they export, an officer said.
In addition to help certifying their products in global markets, Ukraine’s steel manufacturers also need to ensure the safe transportation of their products through the Black Sea.
In August 2023, Ukraine established a maritime corridor from the ports of Odesa, Pivdennyi and Chornomorsk located in the western part of the country. They shipped about 140,000 tonnes of steel products from the first two regions in November alone. The volume indicated a one-third drop from 213,500 tonnes exported from these ports in October.
