Coal imports in China's Taiwan fell for the fifth consecutive month in November, marking a new low since January 2022 and also the lowest compared with the same period since 2011, preliminary customs data showed.
Taiwan imported 3.89 million tonnes of coal in November, falling 3.24% year on year (YoY) and 20.68% month on month (MoM).
The import value of coal in November was $635 million, down 40.31% from a year ago and 20.26% from October. The average import price was calculated at $163.51/t, down 38.32% year on year yet edging up 0.53% month on month, data showed.
Australia remained the largest source of coal imports to Taiwan in November, with shipments totaling 1.82 million tonnes (+5.6% YoY, -9.53% MoM), followed by Indonesia at 1.20 million tonnes (-5.66% YoY, -27.05% MoM) and Russia at 455,900 tonnes (-28.76% YoY, +18.61% MoM).
By type, the bulk of its coal imports was bituminous coal in November, totaling 3.15 million tonnes, down 3.19% YoY and 12.19% MoM; imports of other coal reached 729,800 tonnes, dropping 2.61% YoY and 44.07% MoM.
From January to November, Taiwan's total coal imports were 54.52 million tonnes, down 7.69% YoY, while the total import earnings were $11.14 billion, down 25.07% YoY, data showed.
In November, Taiwan imported 14,600 tonnes of coke, surging 73.31% YoY and 246.36% MoM, with the import value at $4.84 million, soaring 66.31% YoY and 222.45% MoM.
Total coke imports in January-November declined 26.33% year on year to 144,000 tonnes, with the value down 48.82% YoY to $50.49 million.
Taiwan also imported 1.66 million tonnes of LNG in November, up 5.51% YoY and 0.63% MoM, with the value down 35.82% YoY and 0.34% MoM to $956 million.
