Mongolia has expanded its coal export infrastructure with the opening of two new automated container terminals near the Chinese border, boosting total shipment capacity by over 50 million tonnes per annum, the government said.
The $92-million Gashuunsukhait terminal in the southern province of Umnugobi began operations in November 2023, with an annual capacity of 10 million tonnes, according to a resolution by the Mongolian cabinet.
A second new automated terminal at Shiveekhuren border port is expected to quadruple its coal export capacity to 40 Mtpa upon completion.
The terminals are part of Mongolia's "New Revival Policy" to develop multi-modal transport links and drive the landlocked country's border trade to "a new level".
