Coal exports from Russia to China via the Suifenhe border crossing increased 50% from a year earlier to 2 million tonnes in the first ten months of 2023, according to data from Russian rail operator Far Eastern Railway.
The higher coal shipments come as Russia aims to boost energy sales to China and other Asian markets after western sanctions over the conflict with Ukraine disrupted European trade flows.
Russia's deputy energy minister Sergei Mochalnikov said Russian coal exports to China will reach 100 million tonnes this year, according to Interfax.
Traffic in both directions at the Grodekovo-Suifenhe border point amounted to around 6.8 million tonnes in the ten-month period, up 1.7% from a year earlier, the rail operator said.
From January to October, cross-border goods shipments on railways operated by Far Eastern Railway totaled 11.9 million tonnes, an increase of 21.9% year on year, data showed.
