Vietnam's coal production declined for the second straight month in December 2023, falling below 4 million tonnes, according to the latest data from the General Statistics Office (GSO).
Vietnam produced 3.43 million tonnes of coal in December, down 12.21% from 3.90 million tonnes a year ago and 16.68% compared to 4.11 million tonnes in the previous month, data showed.
In 2023, Vietnam's cumulative coal output amounted to 48.18 million tonnes, 3.32% lower than 49.83 million tonnes in 2022, with the decline expanding by 0.76 percentage point from the last eleven months.
The country's coal production is estimated at 3.74 million tonnes in January, up 15.5% year on year and 9.22% month on month.
The majority of domestically produced coal in Vietnam is used for local electricity generation, cement production, and other industrial purposes.
