India imported a total 24.65 million tonnes of coal in December 2023, rising 41.7% year on year yet down 3.74% on the month, according to data released by Iman resources.
In the month, non-coking coal imports in the country increased 55.84% from a year ago but fell 8.73% from the previous month to 16.65 million tonnes, while coking coal intakes reached 4.89 million tonnes, up 9.45% year on year and 9.68% on the month.
India imported 1.49 million tonnes of PCI coal during the same period, rising 2.73% from the year prior and 6.84% from a month earlier. Anthracite imports climbed up 46.47% year on year yet declined 1.92% month on month to 233,100 tonnes.
In December, Indonesia was the largest non-coking coal supplier to India with shipment at 10.33 million tonnes, surging 76.13% YoY but down 7.78% MoM. Non-coking coal intakes from South Africa came in at 3.28 million tonnes, soaring 65.15% YoY yet falling 2% MoM, data showed.
The country imported 3.15 million tonnes of coking coal from Australia over the month, edging down 0.48% YoY but up 21.8% MoM; inflows from the U.S. were 865,700 tonnes, surging 92.84% YoY and up 15.66% MoM.
In the full year of 2023, India's accumulated imports of non-coking coal reached 180 million tonnes and that of coking coal stood at 57.06 million tonnes. PCI coal imports totaled 17.32 million tonnes.
