Russia's deputy energy minister Sergei Mochalnikov said Russian coal exports to China will reach 100 million tonnes this year, according to a report on wire service Interfax.
Despite the absence of official coal export data from Russia's customs since January 2022, ahead of the outbreak of its conflict with Ukraine, insights into the volume of coal exported to China can be gleaned from data released by the receiving side.
Russian coal influx to China averaged 287,000 tonnes per day during first ten months, with total imports at 87.2 million tonnes, according to data from China's General Administration of Customs.
Despite import and export data may not align perfectly due to transportation delays, these figures serve as a reliable reference.
China's coal imports from Russia, extrapolating from current daily coal turnover, is expected to be at 105 million tonnes through the whole year of 2023, which is substantially 54% higher from 2022 and nearly doubles from 57 million tonnes in 2021.
Notable spikes in Russia's coal exports to China reflect the impact of sanctions from some main markets such as EU, which has greatly changed distribution of global trade flows.
