Russia's coal production in 2023 dipped 1% on the year to 430 million tonnes, data from federal statistics service Rosstat showed.
Production of anthracite, a type of coal used for heating and generating electricity, rose 5% to 25.7 million tonnes. But output of coking coal, used in steelmaking, dipped 1% to 106 million tonnes.
Lignite production – used mainly for heat and power generation – edged up 2% to 91.5 million tonnes.
In December 2023, coal production in Russia dropped 11% from the year ago to 38.6 million tonnes.
