Coal production in India totaled 99.73 million tonnes in January 2024, up 10.3% against the same month a year earlier, government data showed.
Coal India Ltd (CIL), the country's largest coal miner, saw output rise 9.1% to 78.41 million tonnes last month, compared with 71.88 million tonnes in January 2023, according to data from the coal ministry.
Cumulative coal production in the first ten months of the current fiscal (April-January) climbed 12.2% to 784.11 million tonnes, compared with 698.99 million tonnes during the corresponding period a year ago.
Coal supply in January increased 6.5% to 87.37 million tonnes compared to 82.02 million tonnes in January 2023. Dispatches by CIL grew 4.8% to 67.56 million tonnes.
Cumulative coal supply during the April-January period rose 10.8% to 797.66 million tonnes from 719.78 million tonnes in the year-earlier period.
Coal inventories at mines stood at 70.37 million tonnes as of January 31, up 47.9% from a year ago, while stockpiles at thermal power plants were 36.16 million tonnes, 15.3% higher.
"The focus of the government is on increasing the domestic production of coal and to eliminate non-essential imports of coal in the country. Most of the requirements of coal in the country are met through indigenous production/supply," Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said.
