Shanxi, China's top coal-producing province, has announced a comprehensive safety inspection from November 17, 2023 to February 29, 2024, in a bid to eliminate hidden risks in key industries, including coal sector, following a tragic incident that claimed 26 lives, according to a notice issued by the provincial safety watchdog.
The fire accident at an official building of a mining company in Luliang on November 16 killed 26 and injured at least 38, and is one the most severe accidents happened in recent years.
Both the provincial and municipal regulatory authorities will conduct on-site inspections in key industries and ensure inspection ratio of no less than 3% and 10% of the total, respectively, according to a notice issued by the provincial work safety committee.
Main officials of the county-level party committee, government, and industry safety supervision departments that neglect to take effective measures against illegal mining, leading to serious consequences, will be dismissed and held accountable.
Any criminal offenses will be transferred to the judicial authorities for prosecution in accordance with the law, the notice said.
The campaign is expected to pose certain impact on overall production, especially at a time when most Chinese miners usually reduce coal output around the end of the year and put safety on the top agenda.
