Some coal mines suspended in Lishi, Luliang in northern China's Shanxi province are expected to gradually resume production in the afternoon of November 17 after an office building fire accident at a coal mine a day earlier, local miner sources told Sxcoal.
A fire accident occurred in a coal mining company's office building in Lishi on November 16, causing 26 deaths and at least 38 injuries, according to the latest report from state media Xinhua News Agency. On the same day of the accident, all local mines in Lishi were ordered to temporarily suspend production.
Mines owned by the company responsible for the accident will continue to remain suspended until further notice.
Despite the resumption of those non-accident mines, coking coal supply is still likely to be tight in the region, as most miners would prioritize safety under stringent inspections, local sources pointed out.
Other mining areas in Shanxi are also under heightened safety warnings. Some city-level governments directed local miners to take proactive measures to prevent potential accidents and ensure the safety of workers especially approaching the end of the year.
President Xi Jinping asked all regions and relevant departments to conduct thorough inspections in key industries to prevent such accidents and safeguard people's lives.
