Hami customs affiliated with Urumqi customs in northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region imported the first batch of over 200 tonnes of coking coal from Mongolia, local media reported recently.
Hami is known for its abundant coal resource reserves and varieties, especially for thermal coal and oil-rich coal. However, coking coal is scarce in the region.
Local coking coal output hovers at about 1 million tonnes per annum, while demand exceeds 10 million tonnes, mainly from local chemical and steel plants, as well as users in the surrounding areas.
Hami needs to purchase coking coal from major coal-producing regions including Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and Shanxi to meet the market demand. In a strategic move, it also turns to import coal from Mongolia through the Laoyemiao border port.
Hami customs issued multiple policies to help enterprises with import needs to complete the declaration process with dedicated personnel. It also tracked all aspects of customs clearance to get real-time information and conducted on-site inspections as soon as possible to ensure the smooth clearance of the first batch of imported coking coal.
The director of Hami customs Fan Weigong said that they will continue to improve customs clearance efficiency to provide more convenience for enterprises, contributing to the diversified development of port business.
