China imported 5.70 million tonnes of steel products during January-September 2023, a year-on-year slump of 31.7%, according to the data released by the General Administration of Customs on October 13.
The import value came in at $9.62 billion during the first nine months, down 27.4% on the year. The average import price was calculated at $1,688.7/t, up 6.3% year on year.
In September, China imported 0.64 million tonnes of steel products, down 28.3% year on year and unchanged month on month.
The total imports were worth $1.05 billion, down 25.6% year on year and 2.2% month on month, with the average import price at $1,633.3/t, up 3.5% year on year yet down 2.2% month on month.
During January-September, China imported 880 million tonnes of iron ore and concentrates, up 6.7% on the year. Import amounts were $98.06 billion, down 2.2% from the preceding year, with the average import price at $111.9/t, which was down 8.3% from a year ago.
In September, China imported 100 million tonnes of iron ore and concentrates, rising 1.5% year on year but falling 4.9% month on month. Imports were worth $10.8 billion, 4.0% higher than a year earlier but down 5.9% month on month. The average import price was up 2.5% on the year but down 1.1% on the month to $106.8/t.
