Australia's coking coal exports rose above 13 million tonnes for the first time in five months in November 2023, mainly owing to robust demand from Indian buyers and increased shipping volume in Queensland.
The November exports increased 9.4% from October but fell by 5.4% from the year-ago level to 13.02 million tonnes, showed data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Australia exported 8.65 million tonnes of hard coking coal in the month, up by 22% month on month yet down 4.9% year on year.
Hard coking coal shipments to Australia's largest buyer India rebounded from a month earlier on firm demand, while shipping throughput in Queensland also increased in November.
However, this is partly offset by weaker Japanese demand.
Collective exports of semi-soft and PCI coal were at 4.37 million tonnes in November, down by 6.3% year on year and 9.2% month on month.
