China's Shanxi Coking Coal Group, the country's largest producer of the steelmaking material, has been summoned by relevant provincial authorities over safety issues on December 18, the provincial emergency response authority said in a statement on December 19.
The group's senior officials were summoned by the Shanxi Emergency Management Department and the Shanxi Bureau of the National Mine Safety Administration on production conditions and main problems of its coal mines, the statement said.
Local authorities pointed out that the group faces "grim and complex" safety situation and had not learned from previous accidents, and asked it to "resolutely curb" major accidents and conduct safety checks.
Since this year, the group has experienced multiple accidents at coal mines under its control.
On November 24, one miner was killed in Xiegou coal mine, owned by Xishan Jinxing Energy Co., Ltd under Shanxi Coking Coal Group Co., Ltd. On December 14, three workers were dead when cleaning a bunker used to store coal at No.1 Shaqu coal mine, which belongs to Huajin Coking Coal Company also under Shanxi Coking Coal Group.
In 2022, Shanxi Coking Coal Energy Group, a listed subsidiary of the group, mined 43.85 million tonnes of raw coal and 18.33 million tonnes of washed coal. It sold 32.17 million tonnes of commercial coal during the year, and 7.32 million tonnes of washed coking coal.
The company plans to produce 42.05 million tonnes of raw coal and 18.5 million tonnes of washed coking coal in 2023.
