The India's government will conduct the next round of commercial auction for 26 coal mines on December 20, the Ministry of Coal announced on December 18.
Of these mines, 12 are located in Madhya Pradesh, eight in Chhattisgarh, five in Jharkhand, and one in Telangana.
Out of the total, seven mines have been fully explored, while 19 have been partially explored, the ministry said.
Notably, unlike previous auctions, there are no restrictions on the sale or utilization of coal this time, local media reported.
To facilitate ease of doing business, the ministry has introduced a single window clearance system portal, aiming to streamline the process of obtaining various clearances required for the early operationalization of coal mines, ultimately enhancing coal production through a unified gateway.
The government has been taking proactive measures to ramp up domestic coal production in response to growing demand in the fast-growing economy.
In the current fiscal year (April 2023-March 2024), coal production has reached approximately 591.40 million tonnes as of November 2023, up 13% from the year prior.
The increase in domestic output led to a 4.2% year-on-year decline in coal imports from April to October 2023 to 148.13 million tonnes, according to data from mjunction.
