A key rail line in Australia's New South Wales state remained closed after an empty coal train derailed about 80 kilometres west of Muswellbrook in the Bylong Valley on December 6.
The crash sparked a grassfire that was controlled on December 10 after burning nearly 40 hectares. Luckily, no one was injured in the accident.
The accident has caused damage to the track that forms 1,400km Hunter Valley coal network.
The derailed train, operated by Aurizon, was reportedly travelling from Peabody Energy's Upper Hunter Valley Wilpinjong coal mine on the Muswellbrook – Ulan line and bound for Newcastle port when it derailed.
The line, operated by Australian Rail Track Corp (ARTC) said the line will be closed indefinitely during the damage assessment period, and hasn't given specific resumption time.
The Hunter Valley coal network is one of the largest coal supply chain in the world. Most coal shipments around the network will be not be impacted by this accident, but Yancoal's Moolarben and Glencore's Ulan Coal operation could be affected.
The railway network sent 217 trains on average per day this year, with coal shipment at 147 million tonnes, of which 132 million tonnes were exported via Newcastle port.
