Japan will refrain from constructing new coal-fired power plants without greenhouse gas emission reduction measures, the country's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said during the COP 28 climate talks in Dubai.
The commitment highlights Japan's dedication to achieving the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, Japan News reported.
Coal-fired power plants currently contribute approximately 30% of Japan's energy, but emit great amount greenhouse gas emissions.
The prime minister also expressed support for the ambitious target of tripling the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030. He outlined plans for a summit meeting of the Asian Zero Emission Community, a framework aimed at decarbonizing Asia, scheduled to take place in the coming month.
Japan aims to contribute to the international community by leveraging its expertise in renewable energy technologies, according to media report.
