India plans to boost domestic coal production to 1.58 billion tonnes by 2030 as part of a broader strategy to meet the growing demand for coal and electricity in the country, according to an announcement by the coal ministry.
The ministry outlined a phased approach, with an interim goal of reaching 1.4 billion tonnes by 2027.
In the past fiscal year 2022-23, the country's coal production totaled 893 million tonnes, with a 14.76% rise year on year.
As the world's second-largest producer and consumer of coal, India has strategically invested in domestic projects and leveraged technological advancements to accelerate its coal production in recent years.
In a separate statement released by the ministry last year, it expected the country's coal output to reach 1.46 billion tonnes in the 2027-28 fiscal year and a further rise to 1.51 billion tonnes in the FY2029-30.
While there are slight variations in the incremental targets, the consistent focus on substantial growth remains unchanged.
Simultaneously, India is taking steps to reduce its reliance on imported thermal coal, mostly used for power generation.
However, despite a surge in domestic coking coal (for steelmaking) production, the demand for imported coking coal is expected to rise further as the increase in domestic production is less likely to cover the significant expansion in steel capacity.
To achieve the targets, the Ministry of Coal has detailed plans, including the establishment of new mines, capacity expansion of existing mines, and encouraging private and commercial mining operations. These strategic pillars are expected to contribute to the nation's coal production growth.
As India charts a course toward energy security and economic development, the emphasis on boosting domestic coal production underscores its commitment to meeting the surging demand for energy while simultaneously navigating the challenges associated with environmental concerns and import dependencies.
