Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel are pursuing regulatory approvals required in the U.S. and other jurisdictions to finalize the planned $15 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel, according to a statement by Nippon Steel on February 7.
The deal has faced criticism from some Democratic and Republican U.S. lawmakers, as well as the powerful United Steelworkers union.
Nippon Steel is on track to complete the acquisition in the coming months.
On December 18, 2023, the world's fourth-largest steelmaker clinched a deal to buy U.S. Steel, emerging victorious over competitors such as Cleveland-Cliffs, ArcelorMittal, and Nucor.
