A fire broke out on the surface of a coal mine owned by Evraz, a Russian steel producer, in the Kemerovo region on October 10, Reuters reported, citing the mine's operator and local emergency services.
All workers were safely evacuated from the mine with no harm to the employees' well-being, the mine's operator Raspadskaya said.
The Kemerovo region, which is rich in coal resources, has previously experienced mining disasters. In 2007, the Ulyanovskaya mine witnessed the most severe mining accident after the Soviet Union's collapse, resulting in over 100 fatalities. In 2010, explosions at the Raspadskaya mine claimed the lives of more than 90 individuals. In 2021, another explosion caused 51 deaths.
Emergency services in Kemerovo initiated an evacuation after a degassing box on the surface caught fire.
According to Russian news agency Interfax, over 250 miners were present in the mine during the fire. A spokesperson from Raspadskaya stated that the fire, connected to the ventilation system on the surface of the mine, would not disrupt the mine's normal operations.
