India imported a total of 20.69 million tonnes of coal in January 2024, rising 17.27% year on year yet down 16.09% on the month, according to data released by Iman resources.
In the month, non-coking coal imports in the country increased 28.08% from a year ago but fell 22.65% from the previous month to 12.88 million tonnes, while coking coal intakes reached 4.53 million tonnes, down 4.27% year on year and 7.39% on the month.
India imported 1.58 million tonnes of PCI coal during the same period, rising 26.75% from the year prior and 5.74% from a month earlier. Anthracite imports climbed up 46.46% year on year yet declined 19.32% month on month to 188,000 tonnes.
In January, Indonesia was the largest non-coking coal supplier to India with shipment at 8.20 million tonnes, surging 85.47% YoY but down 20.56% MoM. Non-coking coal intakes from South Africa came in at 2.76 million tonnes, soaring 108.20% YoY yet falling 15.87% MoM, data showed.
The country imported 2.69 million tonnes of coking coal from Australia over the month, down 21.54% YoY and 14.57% MoM; inflows from the U.S. were 707,900 tonnes, rising 18.39% YoY yet falling 18.22% MoM.
