Coal production in Russia's key producing area of Kuzbass declined 2.3% compared to the same month last year to 17.10 million tonnes in January 2024, according to the Ministry of Coal Industry of Kuzbass.
Coal produced from opencast mines stood at 11.40 million tonnes in the same month, up 3.6% year on year, while that from underground mines fell 12.3% on the year to 5.70 million tonnes.
In January, production of coking coal reached 5.70 million tonnes, rising 1.8% year on year. Thermal coal extraction volumes decreased 4.2% on the year to 11.40 million tonnes.
A total of 15.00 million tonnes of coal were delivered to end-users via railway, down 11.94% or 1.60 million tonnes compared to the prior year.
Specifically, 6.60 million tonnes were transported westward, a year-on-year drop of 29.41% or 1.50 million tonnes. Kuzbass shipped 4.80 million tonnes of coal to the eastern region, up 0.20 million tonnes or 4.35% year on year. Coal shipments to local coal-fired power plants amounted to 3.60 million tonnes, down 0.30 million tonnes or 9.09% on the year.
As of January 1, 2024, coal stocks in Kuzbass totaled 21.00 million tonnes, 0.5% or 0.1 million tonnes lower than the year-ago level amid falling global coal prices and logistical issues.
