The United States produced 42.95 million short tons (38.96 million tonnes) of coal in January 2024, down 15.8% from 51.01 million short tons a year ago and 8.5% from the previous month's 46.94 million short tons, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in its Monthly Energy Review on February 27.
The U.S. exported 8.48 million short tons of coal in December 2023, rising 22.12% from the year-ago level of 6.94 million short tons and up 2.7% from 8.25 million short tons a month ago, data showed.
Total coal exports stood at 99.79 million short tons in the full year of 2023, up 16.1% from 85.96 million short tons in 2022.
The country consumed 32.99 million short tons of coal in November 2023, declining 8.31% on the year and 3.29% month on month.
The power sector was estimated to consume 29.64 million short tons of coal in November, down 8.8% year on year; the industrial sector consumed 3.29 million short tons, falling 3.52% on the year; the commercial sector used 71,000 short tons, decreasing 10.13% year on year.
Total coal consumption came in at 391 million short tons during the first eleven months in 2023, a 16.8% drop year on year. Of this, 355 million short tons were consumed by the power sector and 35.46 million short tons were used by the industrial sector, down 17.6% and 7.84% year on year, respectively.
