Coal shipments from Australia's Gladstone port decreased 11.0% from a year earlier to 5.06 million tonnes in January 2024, which also slumped 19.8% from a month ago, showed data from the Gladstone Ports Corporation.
Gladstone shipped 1.87 million tonnes of coal to Japan in the month, down 9.1% year on year yet up 7.7% month on month, while India received 0.79 million tonnes of coal from the port, down 29.2% from the corresponding period last year and 30.7% on the month.
Coal exports to South Korea were 0.66 million tonnes in January, plummeting 53.3% on the year and 63.7% on the month, data showed.
The notable decline of coal exports from the port may be attributed to the maintenance shutdown from January 15-18, 2024.
Around 70% of Gladstone coal exports are metallurgical coal, used for steelmaking, and the rest 30% are thermal coal for power generation.
The total exports were 63.74 million tonnes in 2023, up 3.0% from a year ago, the data showed.
