Power generation from power plants based on domestic coal in India rose 7.14% in the first nine months of FY 2023-24 (April-December, 2023), government data showed, underscoring robust electricity demand growth in Asia's third-largest economy.

Domestic coal-based power generation between April and December amounted to 872 TWh, compared with 813.9 TWh during the same period last year, the Ministry of Coal said.

This met increased demand as overall power generation grew 6.71% to 1,837 TWh, it added.

India also reduced imports of coal for blending at utilities by 40.66% to 17.08 million tonnes over the period. This came despite higher power use, showing increased self-reliance in domestic coal supply.

Coal accounts for over 70% of India's power output. The rise in coal-fired generation has helped satisfy rising demand from industry and infrastructure growth.

To sustain this, the government is pushing to raise domestic coal output and cut reliance on imports. This should boost foreign exchange reserves while strengthening energy security, analysts noted.
