China imported 26.49 million tonnes of thermal coal (including non-coking bituminous coal, sub-bituminous coal and lignite) in October, rising 19.01% year on year but down 12.28% month on month, customs data showed.
It marks the second consecutive month-on-month drop, yet still the highest of the same month in history.
The imports were valued at $2.02 billion, down 14.78% year on year and 11.59% month on month. The average import price was calculated at $76.39/t, falling 28.39% year on year but ticking up 0.79% month on month.
Total thermal coal imports reached 287 million tonnes from January to October, soaring 69.91% or 118 million tonnes year on year, with value up 38.19% to $26.79 billion.
Lignite imports in October rose 2.37% on the year but fell 3.29% from September to 12.5 million tonnes. Value of the imports amounted to $715 million, down 32.13% year on year and 2.09% month on month. The average lignite import price was calculated at $57.2/t in the month, down 33.7% year on year yet up 1.24% month on month.
Lignite imports in the first ten months totaled 133 million tonnes, up 29.57% or 30.44 million tonnes on the year; value of the imports declined 1.45% year on year to $9.63 billion.
