Japan imported 13.85 million tonnes of coal in October, a 5.9% decrease year on year, showed the preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance.
The import value was 423.1 billion yen ($2.83 billion), falling 45.7% from a year ago, data showed.
Imports from the U.S. surged 55.7% from a year ago to 1.14 million tonnes, with the value up 15.5% to 36.26 billion yen. Russian coal receipts declined 15.6% compared with the previous year to 416,000 tonnes, which was worth 10.42 billion yen, a notable 62.5% decrease.
In September, Japan imported 8.62 million tonnes of thermal coal, down 5.1% on the year, with import value at 244.49 billion yen, tumbling 52.4% year on year.
Thermal coal intakes from the U.S. were 443,000 tonnes, up 52.7% from a year earlier; value fell 8.2% on the year to 11.7 billion yen. The country imported 403,000 tonnes of thermal coal from Russia, 4.3% lower than the same month last year, with the value down 58.7% to 9.84 billion yen.
Japan imported 5.41 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas during the month, up 6.4% from the preceding year; value fell 37.6% on the year to 495.56 billion yen.
