India's largest state-run power generator NTPC achieved a milestone after its coal production exceeded 100 million tonnes from its captive mines on February 25, 2024, as stated by NTPC in a recent release.
NTPC Mining Ltd., the coal mining subsidiary, has churned out a total 100.04 million tonnes of coal since commencing production at its first coal mine, Pakri Barwadih, on January 1, 2017. Remarkably, the initial 50 million tonnes of coal were produced in a span of 1,995 days, with the subsequent 50 million tonnes achieved in just 617 days, the company said.
Coal output from NTPC's captive mines plays a pivotal role in ensuring the company's fuel security and facilitating an efficient supply chain.
NTPC Mining Ltd. boasts five operational captive coal mines, namely Pakri Barwadih, Chatti Bariatu, and Kerandari coal mines in Jharkhand, Dulanga coal mine in Odisha, and Talaipalli coal mine in Chhattisgarh.
Looking ahead, NTPC Mining Ltd. aims to achieve an annual coal production target of 100 million tonnes by 2030, which aligns with NTPC's vision of enhancing self-sufficiency in fuel supply.
