The Ministry of Coal in India reviewed the current status of captive and commercial coal mines, both those already in production and expected to commence production, and urged the allottees to increase their efforts to achieve the coal output targets set for the current fiscal year, an official statement said.
In a high-level meeting, M Nagaraj, additional secretary of the ministry, also emphasized the need for operationalizing coal blocks that are in advanced stages of development, local media reported.
As of December, there were 50 captive and commercial coal mines in production. Within three-and-a-half years since the auctioning of commercial coal mines began in 2020, six mines with a cumulative Peak Rated Capacity of 14.87 million tonnes have already started production.
In December 2023, the combined coal production from captive and commercial coal mines increased 38% from a year ago to 14.04 million tonnes.
From April to December 2023, coal production from captive and commercial coal mines amounted to around 98 million tonnes, up 26% year on year, while the total coal dispatch rose 32% on the year to 103 million tonnes.
The coal ministry is dedicated to maintaining this positive momentum and making determined efforts to meet ambitious goals for production and dispatch.
