Construction work is progressing rapidly on building a double track of the Xingbao Railway, a major coal transport line running through northern China's Shanxi province, the latest effort to reinforce the province's outbound coal outbound shipping capacity, local media reported.
The project includes building a 21.8km rail track along the original track from Xingxian to Baode country – with 7.8 km running through Xingxian and 14 km through Baode, as well as adding two coal handling zones and 10 storage shelters, which are expected to increase the annual handling capacity by 40 million tonnes.
With a total investment of 6.13 billion yuan ($859 million), the project is divided into two phases.
The first phase focuses on the railway and storage-transport-loading complex in the western district, which is estimated to cost 3.25 billion yuan. It will increase annual coal shipments to 130 million tonnes and storage capacity to 70 million tonnes once completed.
The construction work began in November 2022 and is scheduled to finish the storage-transport-loading complex by June 2024 and the railway by September 2025.
The second phase will add a storage area and access roads in the eastern district, costing 2.88 billion, lifting overall handling capacity to 90 million tonnes per year.
The expansion will play a crucial role in transporting coal from major coal bases in Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia, boosting the railway's transport capacity to 50 million tonnes annually, one local official introduced.
