Thailand's thermal coal (including bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) imports in October stood at 1.39 million tonnes, falling 17.02% year on year and 10.77% month on month, hitting a three-month low, customs data showed.
Bituminous coal imports reached 704,900 tonnes in October, rising 44.78% on the year and 45.61% on the month. Imports from Australia were registered at 598,700 tonnes, 1.17 times compared with 275,700 tonnes from a year ago; shipments from Indonesia were 105,500 tonnes, sliding 49.88% from 210,500 tonnes of the preceding year.
Sub-bituminous coal imports totaled 690,200 tonnes, down 42.21% year on year and 36.05% month on month. Indonesia remained the largest supplier at 690,100 tonnes, decreasing 35.07% from 1.06 million tonnes a year earlier, while shipments from Malaysia were 43.9 tonnes compared with zero in the corresponding month last year.
Anthracite imports were 18,000 tonnes, higher than 1,313 tonnes a year ago and 708 tonnes a month ago. In October, the country imported zero volume of coking coal.
In January-October, Thailand's thermal coal imports accumulated 15.16 million tonnes, down 13.81% year on year. Bituminous coal imports reached 5.21 million tonnes, up 5.79% year on year; sub-bituminous coal imports declined 21.44% to 9.94 million tonnes.
The country's coal consumption amounted to 24.22 million tonnes during the first nine months of this year, down 9.35% on the year, official data showed. This included 14.98 million tonnes burned by power plants, down 7.78% year on year, accounting for 61.8% of the country's total coal consumption over the period.
