Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has sped up coal deliveries to other provinces and regions ahead of the peak winter season, driving the accumulative outbound coal supplies to 51.71 million tonnes so far this year, a 7.7% year-on-year increase, local media reported on November 22.
Xinjiang is the fourth largest coal-producing base in China, with its proven coal reserves at 450 billion tonnes, making up one-fourth of the country's total and only second to Inner Mongolia.
As temperatures dropped noticeably in some northern areas of China, Xinjiang Railway Bureau has taken proactive measures to streamline coal transportation to other areas, operating open-top coal trains and optimizing coal delivery to regions such as northwestern China's Gansu, and southwestern China's Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guizhou province.
Xinjiang Railway's accumulative coal transportation reached 114 million tonnes so far in 2023, rising 5.42% year on year.
During the first nine months this year, Xinjiang churned out 316 million tonnes of raw coal, climbing 8.4% year on year, representing 9.2% of the country's total, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.
