Russia churned out 360.4 million tonnes of coal in January-October 2023, reflecting a slight increase of 0.3% or 1.2 million tonnes on the year, according to the country's energy ministry.
Coal exports climbed to 181.3 million tonnes over the same period, up 3.9% or 6.9 million tonnes from a year earlier.
According to the energy ministry's projection, Russian coal production is anticipated to reach 440.0 million tonnes in 2023, a marginal decrease of 0.7% or 3.5 million tonnes year on year, while coal exports are predicted to grow 5.3% or 10.3 million tonnes from the previous year to 220.0 million tonnes.
The EU countries and the UK have introduced an embargo on Russian coal imports since August 10, 2022, prompting the development of new trade routes and modifications in coal export logistics. The decline in the European market has been compensated by redirecting supplies towards Asia-Pacific nations.
However, the expected increase in exports would be closely related to the availability of railway infrastructure, which is currently operating at maximum capacity, particularly for eastbound deliveries.
Russia's share in global coal exports is expanding and now stands at 16%, with demand for Russian coal surpassing export capacity by two-fold.
