India's steel ministry has reached out to Mongolia to seek supports in logistics and investments for importing coking coal from the land-locked country, said Nagendra Nath Sinha, the Union Steel Secretary.
The country is also in discussion to increase coking coal deliveries from Russia, Indonesia and New Zealand.
A joint working group of Indian and Mongolian government officials will be activated to undertake various explorations to see how to better push such cooperation.
The move aims to tackle with increasing volatility in coking coal prices, especially of Australian coking coal. Prices of such coal grade have seen a $100/t jump over past six months.
The ministry once stressed an improvement is needed for Mongolian washing plants to allow India access to better coal grades with lower ash content.
Other concerns of the ministry persisted in finding alternative routes to import Mongolian coal, considering the geological position of Mongolia is circled by other two main consumers — China and Russia.
Reportedly, Mongolia has rail connectivity to Russia and China and the ports of these countries. The push is towards leveraging these lines for exporting coal.
Three major rail projects have been commissioned in 2022 and four new railroad checkpoints will be opened, primarily with a focus on mineral transportation.
