Russia's coal exports are expected to reach the level of 220 million tonnes and coal production at 440 million tonnes in 2023, an official with the country's energy ministry said lately.
The forecasts were given by deputy energy minister Sergei Mochalnikov during the Energy and Transport Infrastructure-Synergy and Dependence round table held as part of Transport Week 2023 in Moscow.
Russia has successfully reoriented its coal exports to other markets, particularly in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region (ATR), he said.
But in the short term, the country still sees infrastructure constraints. Demand for Russian coal for foreign countries is almost twice as big as actual export capabilities in last two months even using the ports of the Southern Basin and North-West, Mochalnikov announced in a press service.
The outbound coal delivery through the Southern Basin ports climbed 19.6% year on year in 2022, but fell by 15.7% year on year during January-September this year. Coal exports via the Baltic ports were down 9.5% year on year in 2022 but surged 25.5% during the first nine months of 2023, according to the IAA PortNews.
The nation produced 443.6 million tonnes of coal in 2022, slightly more than in 2021. Coal exports fell 7.5% to 210.9 million tonnes, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said in an article for the Energy Policy journal in February this year.
