India's ministry of coal plans to commence eighth round of commercial coal mining auction, with 40 mines being offered.
Coal minister Pralhad Joshi is going to make a formal announcement on this event on November 15.
In the past seven auctions, India has successfully auctioned a total of 152 coal mines, with 91 allocated for captive purposes and the rest 61 for commercial use.
India aims to produce 162 million tonnes of coal from both captive and commercial coal mines during the fiscal year 2023-24.
Usually it will take around 50-52 months for a mine to get off the ground once it is allotted or auctioned, said Amrit Lal Meena, union coal secretary.
He pointed there are logistics restraints over coal loading and transportation, which forced India has no choice but to continue coal imports. He added the main demand comes from coastal power utilities, which were designed to use imported coal.
