Coal imports in China's Taiwan extended the decline to a level of less than 5 million tonnes in October, marking a new low since April, preliminary customs data showed.
Taiwan imported 4.90 million tonnes of coal in October, falling 16.02% year on year and 6.19% month on month.
The import value for coal in October was $796 million, down 51.77% from a year ago and 15.36% from September. The average import price was calculated at $162.65/t, down 42.56% year on year and 9.77% month on month.
Australia remained the largest source of coal imports to Taiwan in October, with shipments totaling 2.01 million tonnes (-35.52% YoY, +6.31% MoM), followed by Indonesia at 1.65 million tonnes (-3.56% YoY, +14.1% MoM) and South Africa at 490,300 tonnes (+193.05% YoY, -23.82% MoM).
By type, the bulk of its coal imports was bituminous coal, totaling 3.59 million tonnes, down 18.74% YoY and 13.34% MoM; imports of other coal reached 1.30 million tonnes, dropping 7.62% YoY yet rising 21.14% MoM.
From January to October, Taiwan's total coal imports were 50.63 million tonnes, down 8.01% YoY, while the total import earnings were $10.5 billion, down 23.89% YoY.
In October, Taiwan imported 4,200 tonnes of coke, plunging 67.2% YoY and and 70.13% MoM, with the import value at $1.48 million, slumping 73.7% YoY and 66.72% MoM. Total coke imports in January-October declined 30.65% year on year to 129,400 tonnes, with the value down 52.24% to $45.64 million.
