The Siberian Federal District (SFD) in Russia plans to boost its coal production to 375 million tonnes by 2023, with planned investments in the region's mining industry totaling $7 billion, according to a report from a local media source.
SFD includes main coal production regions Kuzbass, Khakassia, Tuva, the Novosibirsk region and the Krasnoyarsk region.
This program has got approval from the Russian government, and will be implemented in tandem with the strategy of social and economic development of the SFD, which is scheduled until 2035.
The strategy involves nine major investment projects in coal mining area, such as $1.5 billion in Cheksinskoye coal deposit (Kuzbass), Kuzbassrazrezugol (KRU) and $3 billion in Bogatyr open-pit mine (Novosibirsk Region), Coalstar.
Following the strategy, a quarter of coal produced in SFD will be coking coal in 2030, and the share of washed coal will surpass 60%.
More than 16,000 new jobs will be created by this program.
SFD produced 325.5 million tonnes of coal in the year of 2022, and the investment in the industry amounted to $135 million.
