Global mining giant Glencore said its coal production during January-September increased 2.4% from 81.9 million tonnes last year to 83.9 million tonnes, according to its operating report on October 30.
By type, Glencore's thermal coal production totaled 75.9 million tonnes during the first nine months of the year, up 4.1% year on year, while metallurgical coal output reached 8.0 million tonnes, down 11.1% year on year.
Thermal coal production from Australia contributed 46.2 million tonnes. Of this, 41.0 million tonnes were produced for exports, a 3.3% year-on-year rise, while domestic supply fell 3.7% from a year earlier to 5.2 million tonnes, the report showed.
The output from South Africa reached 13.3 million tonnes over the first three quarters. The volume for export purpose came in at 10.4 million tonnes, 6.1% higher than the year-ago level, while domestic supply remained unchanged year on year at 2.9 million tonnes.
The company said the curbed rail shipment in South Africa, hurt by extreme weather conditions and social issues such as theft of cable and railway components, continued to have negative impact on its coal output.
Cerrejon in Colombia, in which Glencore holds a 100% stake, produced 16.4 million tonnes of thermal coal over January-September, rising 8.6% from a year ago.
Coking coal production fell 16.1% year on year to 5.2 million tonnes, while semi-soft coking coal output remained steady at 2.8 million tonnes.
The report said the company's production of all coal types totaled 29.7 million tonnes in the third quarter, up 8.8% year on year and 12.1% quarter on quarter, including 27.3 million tonnes of thermal coal (+10.1% YoY, +17.7% QoQ) and 2.4 million tonnes of metallurgical coal (-4% YoY, -27.3% QoQ).
Glencore has adjusted its coal production target for 2023 from the previous range of 105-115 million tonnes to 106-114 million tonnes.
