The US's coal output was estimated at 11.50 million short tons (10.43 million tonnes) over the week ending October 21, up 8.56% week on week but down 1.45% year on year, showed data from Energy Information Administration on October 26.
Coal production in Wyoming and Montana combined was estimated at 5.20 million short tons, rising 9.86% from a week ago yet falling 7.29% from the previous year.
Illinois's coal output was estimated at 738,800 short tons, up 6.27% compared to the week-ago level and 19.75% on the year, while Appalachian coal production was estimated at 3.29 million short tons, up 7.12% from the week prior and 10.21% from a year ago.
During the first 42 weeks of 2023, US coal output totaled 476 million short tons, a 1.4% decline from 483 million short tons in 2022, data showed.
U.S. rail coal shipments were 67,459 rail wagons, increasing 5,321 from a week earlier and 545 from the preceding year. The year-to-date rail coal shipments totaled 2.77 million wagons, a small 0.3% fall year on year.
