India's coal imports remained high, surpassing Rs 3.85 lakh crore ($459.42 billion) in expenditure last year, leading to significant foreign exchange outflow, the government said on October 19.
Although the proportion of coal imports to total consumption has declined from 26% to 21% over the past five years, the country still imports over 200 million tonnes of coal annually.
The Ministry of Coal aims to boost domestic coal production to ensure an ample supply for the rapidly growing economy. However, the ministry is also committed to protecting forests and has taken measures to address environmental concerns.
Notably, coal mines falling under the Lemru Elephant Corridor in Chhattisgarh have been de-notified, and additional areas beyond the corridor have been considered for exemption.
Furthermore, nine coal mines in the dense Hasdeo-Arand coal field and three lignite mines in Tamil Nadu have been excluded from future auctions, highlighting the ministry's commitment to forest preservation despite industry demands.
