In an upcoming visit to the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, President Joko Widodo of Indonesia is set to explore partnerships with China in renewable energy and infrastructure projects, according to Reuters.
This move would come in parallel with Indonesia's existing $20 billion deal, the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), aimed at decarbonizing the country's energy sector, led by a U.S.-led group of countries.
JETP discussions have faced challenges, with Indonesian officials expressing concerns about Western countries' reluctance to finance the early retirement of coal power plants and the high interest rates associated with JETP loans.
As part of its commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060, Indonesia is keen on cleaning up its energy sector.
Indonesia sees China as a potential partner due to its advancements in renewable energy development and substantial hydropower resources.
While discussions with China are planned, Indonesia is expected to announce its investment plans for JETP next month, ahead of the United Nations COP28 climate summit, albeit three months behind the initial target.
