Japan produced 7.27 million tonnes of crude steel in January, rising 4.0% month on month (MoM) and 0.6% year on year (YoY), according to data released by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation.
The output of ordinary steel was 5.59 million tonnes, up 2.6% from the preceding month yet edging down 0.1% from a year ago; that of special steel was 1.67 million tonnes, up 9.0% MoM and 3.2% YoY.
In January, Japan's blast furnace steel production reached 5.43 million tonnes, increasing 5.8% MoM yet falling 0.1% YoY; electric furnace steel output was 1.84 million tonnes, down 0.8% MoM but up 2.7% YoY.
The production of hot-rolled coils in Japan was 3.07 million tonnes over the same month, climbing 3.5% MoM and 4.4% YoY; H-beam steel production stood at 269,000 tonnes, declining 1.0% MoM and 4.2% YoY, data showed.
The production of pig iron was registered at 5.35 million tonnes in January, rising 5.5% MoM and 0.3% YoY.
Japan's crude steel production totaled 86.99 million tonnes in 2023, down 2.5% from the preceding year; the output of pig iron dropped 1.7% YoY to 63.04 million tonnes.
