U.S. steel shipments were 7.35 million net tons in October 2023, up 1.9% from 7.21 million net tons in the same period last year and 1.3% from 7.25 million net tons in September, showed data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
Total steel shipments stood at 74.13 million net tons in the first ten months this year, down 2.0% from 75.68 million net tons in the same period last year. Among that, hot-rolled sheet shipments rose 8% year on rear; cold-rolled sheet shipments unchanged but corrosion resistant sheet shipments fell 2.0% on the year level, data showed.
U.S. steel imports totaled 2.18 million net tons in October this year, including 1.84 million net tons of finished steel, down 0.3% year on year yet up 16.2% month on month, according to preliminary data from the Census Bureau.
Total and finished steel imports fell 9.8% and 14.2% year on year from January-October, respectively, data showed.
Finished steel import market share was estimated at 19% in October at 22% over the first ten months of 2023.
The imports of key steel products – tinplate, wire rods, heavy structural shapes, hot-rolled bars and reinforcing bars up 124%, 81%, 76%, 45% and 45% in October compared to the month prior, respectively, data showed.
In October, steel imports from Canada rose 4% month on month to 557,000 net tons; that from Mexico fell 14% on the month to 309,000 net tons; South Korea fell 50% compared to September to 167,000 net tons; Japan surged 102% month on month to 134,000 net tons.
