Russian mining and metals group Mechel registered lower production across its coal and steel sectors in the first three quarters of 2023, according to a report released by the company on November 23.
Coal production fell 16% year on year in the January-September period to 7.38 million tonnes, as output continued to feel the impact of sanctions and logistical issues.
Steel output declined 2% to 2.6 million tonnes over the same period. Pig iron production was down 2% at 2.37 million tonnes.
However, coal mining gained 17% in the third quarter versus the previous three months to 2.85 million tonnes, boosted by ongoing technical upgrades and efficiency gains. But steel and pig iron production dipped 5% each from a quarter earlier to 839,000 tonnes and 753,000 tonnes, respectively.
Coking coal concentrate sales dropped 28% to 2.25 million tonnes in the first three quarters, Mechel said. Flat steel product sales declined 5% to 290,000 tonnes.
