Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), a state-owned steel manufacturer, is embarking on a phased expansion plan to increase its steel-making capacity by 15 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), local media reported, citing a senior company official.
With the current capacity of approximately 20 Mtpa, the company aims to reach an annual capacity of 35 million tonnes in the first phase of expansion, Chairman Amarendu Prakash was cited by Press Trust of India as said.
Regarding the timeline and investment figures for the expansion, Prakash mentioned that detailed project reports (DPRs) are currently being developed, making it challenging to provide specific numbers at this stage.
Given the capital-intensive nature of the steel industry, the company intends to seek external funding to supplement its internal resources.
In addition to increasing steel production capacity, SAIL also aims to introduce new technologies and enhance logistics infrastructure for the efficient transportation of raw materials and finished products, the report said.
SAIL, operating under the Ministry of Steel, operates five integrated and three special steel plants situated across various locations in India.
