Kazakhstan nearly has realized self-sufficiency in coal supply in 2023, with share of imported coal only at 0.7% during January-August period, according a report by Kazinform.
The share itched up from 0.4% in 2022, while coal imports from January-August period surged 150% to 491,000 tonnes.
Coal exports in Kazakhstan are expected to remain low since it decides to extend its ban on coal exports by road for another 6 months, effective from November 26.
The inland country produced 84.8 million tonnes of coal during first nine months of this year, down 2.1% from the year prior. Lignite and washed coal mainly produced from Pavlodar and Karaganda, with output respectively at 50.5 million tonnes and 27.2 million tonnes.
Coal exports from Kazakhstan declined 18.3% to 19.4 million tonnes in January-August, while domestic coal sales rose 5.6% to 55.9 million tonnes.
In September, bituminous coal prices in Kazakhstan rose 3%, marking the most remarkable growth in recent two years. The last peak is 3.7% in November 2021.
